🎮 [Indie Horror Game Review] Reflecting on “Kanbyogakari” — A Psychological Horror Exploring Human Darkness & Mental Struggles [Riri Ititama/VTuber]

What do you usually do when your heart feels overwhelmed or hurt?Do you try to recall happy memories?
Do you quietly open up to someone you trust?Or do you seal your feelings away without saying a single word…?
Today, I’d like to introduce a free indie horror game called “Kanbyogakari" (The Caretaker), a title that gently sits beside that kind of emotional pain. Izumi played through this one on stream, so I’m here to share the story and our thoughts on it!
📋 Game Info

Title: Kanbyogakari
Genre: Browser Horror Game / Visual Novel & Adventure
Platform: Web Browser Game
📖 Synopsis
You control a young nurse tasked with caring for girls suffering from mysterious, unnatural illnesses inside a medical facility.
Why do all the sick girls look identical to the caretaker herself?
And whose voice is that echoing through the room…?
Depending on how you care for the patients, the story branches into multiple different endings in this psychological horror game.
💀 [Spoilers] The True Meaning Behind the Unnatural Illnesses🧬
From here on, I’ll be touching on some light spoilers regarding the illnesses and the reality behind the story!
As you might guess from their identical appearances, every single girl in the facility is actually the exact same person—different sides of the protagonist’s own mind. The facility itself represents her inner subconscious. These “unnatural illnesses" are manifestations of her mental struggles. As you read the medical notes and witness her past memories when she “relieves" (kills) the patients, the tragic reality becomes clear:
Guruguru Sickness (Dizzy Sickness): A state born from constantly being bombarded with harsh, abusive words, causing her to shut down her hearing completely. It represents her defense mechanism—only wanting to hear what she wants to hear.
Buwabuwa Sickness (Burning Sickness): A state where intense longings and romantic idealizations collide with harsh reality, leaving her body feeling like it’s burning up from despair.Biribiri Sickness (Shock Sickness): An overwhelming anxiety created by the obsession with “reading the room" and conforming to social expectations. …I totally get this one; that suffocating feeling of being forced to read the room is so tough, right?
There are other illnesses in the game as well, but I’ll leave those for you to discover if you decide to play!
Even if you try your best to care for each patient, failing to keep up causes the caretaker herself to break down—it feels so painfully helpless.
Furthermore, ending the lives of these girls essentially means destroying pieces of her own heart step by step, ultimately leading to… a brutal confrontation with the darkest depths of human psychology.
A white heart and a black heart; the desire to cling to hope versus the urge to just be released from pain. These conflicting emotions exist inside all of us, and anyone could find themselves in this place. That internal tug-of-war is the central theme of this masterpiece, and it really left a lasting impression on me.
💬Overall Impressions
In short, I wouldn’t recommend this game unless you feel mentally resilient right now!
Because it really has a way of dragging you into its heavy, melancholic mood…!
That said, I absolutely loved the BGM and the eerie, somber atmosphere! I’m a huge fan of this kind of dark aesthetic♪
The protagonist—a cute nurse with long black hair—was super charming and totally my style, too!
The girls she cares for, all bearing her face with strange condition names, create an unsettling vibe throughout the playthrough. As the truth unveils piece by piece, it gets quite emotionally intense. Still, because it touches on universal human struggles that we can’t easily avoid in modern society, the endings really make you stop and reflect.
Life doesn’t always go the way we want it to, but I truly believe that brighter, happier days will always come our way.
